Research Assistant (0.8 FTE) – Two Year Contract

The Academy of Urbanism (AoU) in partnership with The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) wish to appoint a Research Assistant to advance the principles and objectives of the AoU in Scotland; assist with the development of and contribute to the AoU’s Regions and Nations Network; and undertake research in urbanism.

The Research Assistant’s key tasks are as follows

  • To work with high level contacts in urbanism across the public and private sectors
  • To organise events working with Academicians of AoU
  • To undertake research under the direction of the Director of the Glasgow Urban Lab (GUL)
  • To prepare quarterly reports on activities
  • To liaise with key AoU staff
  • To liaise with Academicians, Members and external bodies as directed

Person Specification

The Research Assistant will be in continuous network contact with the AoU (Academicians and Members), different organisations, and will manage a workload with clear boundaries on time and budget. We are looking for a self-starter whose creativity and enthusiasm will help stimulate people to get involved with our activities. An interest in and passion for urbanism and making better places is essential.

Candidates for the post will possess many of the following qualities.

  • An ability to manage a varied workload.
  • The ability to work to strict deadlines.
  • An effective approach to planning and organising events.
  • Initiative, independence and creativity in carrying out a plan of work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills in person, on the telephone and by email and letter.
  • Visual and architectural sensibility including the selection and reproduction of images.
  • An ability to write well on cities, planning, architecture and events.
  • Ability to build relationships and identify synergies across those within AoU networks.
  • Ability to contribute to growth of the AoU and Networks through activities and membership and as directed.
  • Ability to positively contribute to growth of the AoU in Scotland (activities and membership) and anything else as directed.

The role is a two-year contract.
