The Academy is delighted to confirm planner and urbanist Steven Bee as our next Chair.

Bee is the Academy’s third Chair, taking over in January from Kevin Murray who succeeded the Academy’s founding Chair, John Thompson in 2011.

Having served as a Director of the Academy for two years, Bee has already initiated and headed the Academy’s Place Partnering initiative, offering a diagnostic service from a panel of Academicians on a pro bono basis to help places identify local opportunities for, and obstacles to, greater vitality.

Bee, currently Principal of consultancy Steven Bee Urban Counsel, has over thirty years experience as a planner in the public and private sectors. He was previously an Executive Board Director of English Heritage and before that Director of Planning and Development Services at Winchester City Council.

Speaking at the Academy’s recent Urbanism Awards Ceremony, Bee said:

“I’m delighted to be taking on the role of Chair. Under Kevin Murray’s leadership the Academy has grown in numbers of Academicians, breadth of interest and influence.

“Over its first eight years, the Academy has brought together urbanists from all walks of life to understand and celebrate the components of great places – Space, Place, Life. We now have a growing body of evidence in our annual Awards finalists, and body of knowledge in our Academicians. I look forward to seeing us extend our activities, influence and profile, nationally and internationally, to inspire all those who can play a role in creating and sustaining successful places.
